Former Wall Street Journal reporter and author-activist Asra Nomani, at the Islamic Cultural Center, on 96th Street and Third Avenue in Manhattan on Tuesday, April 5, 2005. The liberal Muslim writer has championed the cause of women?s rights in Islam, drawing criticism from conservatives for promoting mixed prayer congregations and women-led prayer. After attempting to pray in the main hall of the Islamic Cultural Center, rather than the women?s area, behind a wall at the back of the room, she was admonished by the imam Sheikh Omar Saleem Abu-Namous and prevented from praying the next prayer.......
